DA to finish pig ‘depopulation’ March 6

The Bureau of Animal Industries expects to finish killing the pigs in the Pandi, Bulacan farm by Friday afternoon. A report from BAI said that as of Thursday night, 5,568 pigs had been killed, of the total 6,000 herd. They expect the finish the depopulation Friday night.
The pigs were killed after laboratory tests confirmed an on-going transmission of the Ebola Reston Virus in the farm. Samples of ERV antibodies were earlier found in two herds of pigs, in Pangasinan and in Bulacan. The two farms were quarantined and international experts came to Manila to conduct further studies, because this was the first time that the virus was found in pigs.
Further tests revealed more infected pigs in the Pandi, Bulacan farm but none from Pangasinan. The quarantine on the Pangasinan farm was lifted but the DA said the herd in Bulacan would have to be killed.
